A Glimpse into Our History:
Did you know Tomintoul was a meticulously planned village? Founded in 1776 by the 4th Duke of Gordon, it was strategically laid out in a grid pattern. The Duke’s vision was to create a permanent settlement that would help combat cattle theft and illicit whisky distilling rife in the area at the time. Our attractive square and many of the charming Georgian and Victorian buildings still stand as a testament to this historic design. While early attempts to establish a linen industry weren’t successful, the resilience of our community, rooted in agriculture and, eventually, legal whisky production, saw Tomintoul flourish.
Tomintoul Today:
Nestled at an elevation of about 350m (1150ft), Tomintoul proudly holds the title of the highest village in the Highlands! We’re a vibrant community located within the stunning Cairngorms National Park, offering breathtaking landscapes, a wealth of outdoor activities, and a warm welcome to all.
- Outdoor Paradise: From walking and cycling trails on the Glenlivet Estate to fishing, horse riding, and winter sports at the nearby Lecht Ski Centre, there’s an adventure for everyone.
- Whisky Heartlands: We’re a key part of the Speyside Malt Whisky Trail, with numerous distilleries, including our very own Tomintoul Distillery, just a stone’s throw away.
- Dark Skies: Tomintoul is within the Cairngorms Dark Sky Park, making it an incredible spot for stargazing! The low levels of light pollution are also beneficial for people’s wellbeing and biodiversity.
- Community Spirit: We boast a range of accommodation, cafes, pubs, and shops, all contributing to the lively atmosphere of our village.
Glenlivet Estate: Our Partnership for a Thriving Future:
Tomintoul’s story is deeply intertwined with the surrounding Glenlivet Estate.
This is managed by Crown Estate Scotland and a long term vision has recently been launched for the Estate. This outlines how the Estate will be a place where people and the environment thrive together through effective collaboration and sustainable management. Through balanced land use and shared goals, the Estate aims to support local businesses, enhance biodiversity, and achieve measurable reductions in carbon emissions.
In practice this means that the Estate will make a positive contribution to the local economy and community by working together to deliver a more diversified estate, with better housing and buildings, viable tenant farming businesses, tourism which balances with environmental and community interests, and infrastructure to support these priorities into the future.
They are vital partners in our local area, actively engaged in responsible land management and environmental sustainability. Their commitment includes:
- Conservation & Environment: Protecting the unique biodiversity of the Cairngorms through woodland management, peatland restoration, and river conservation.
- Community Engagement: Fostering shared responsibility for our natural resources through active involvement of the local community in land use and environmental projects.
